Tan Vinyl Gates in San Diego, Built Not to Sag and Never Painted

A tan vinyl gate is the entry you use every day, so it has to swing smoothly, latch every time and stay square for years. A good one does all three without paint, stain or rust. A poorly built one sags within a few seasons and starts dragging on the ground.

Fred's Fencing Inc. has built and installed gates across San Diego County since 1984. We hang tan vinyl gates in N.V.P. (National Vinyl Products) vinyl, which carries a limited lifetime manufacturer warranty, and we reinforce every gate with the right posts, inserts and frames for its width. Because we also fabricate steel in our own Santee shop, we can build the reinforcement that keeps a wide vinyl gate from sagging.

Gate Types

Types of Tan Vinyl Gates We Install

Six styles, sized from a 36″ walk gate to a 20′ sliding driveway gate. Every card shows the typical width and what that gate is best for.

Tan vinyl walk gate with black hinges and latch hung between block wall pillars 36″ to 48″

Walk Gates

The everyday entry between the front yard and the backyard. A tan vinyl walk gate is sized for a person, a trash bin or a wheelbarrow, and built in your choice of board style, height and post caps.

Best for
Side yards, backyard entries and trash bin access
Full-height tan vinyl privacy gate between a stucco house and a block wall on a concrete side yard 36″ to 72″

Privacy Gates

Full-height solid gates with tongue-and-groove boards and no gaps, so they block views completely. We hang them with minimal ground clearance, so there is no sightline at the bottom.

Best for
Full-height entries with no sightlines through
36″ to 48″

Picket Gates

Low, open gates for front-yard and garden entries. A tan picket gate feels warmer and less formal than white, and it suits Craftsman, ranch and Spanish-style homes.

Best for
Front yards and garden entries

Double Gates

Two leaves that open together for a wide opening. One leaf is held in place with a drop rod, so the other can be used like a single gate for daily access. For double gates wider than 8 feet, we use an upgraded galvanized steel tube frame for strength and support.

Best for
Lawn equipment, trailers, pool furniture and RV access
12′ to 20′

Sliding Gates

On sloped or short driveways where there is no room for a gate to swing, a vinyl-clad gate can roll sideways instead. Wide openings and heavy daily use may suit a dedicated steel sliding driveway gate better, which we can also build.

Best for
Driveways with limited swing space or a slope
36″ to 48″

Pool Gates

Self-closing, self-latching and opening away from the pool — built to California's pool barrier rules. See the pool gate rules.

Best for
Pool entries that must self-close and self-latch

Why Tan

Why Choose a Tan Vinyl Gate?

  • Matches Warm-Toned Homes

Tan, beige and sand-colored stucco is everywhere in San Diego County. A tan gate picks up those warm tones instead of standing out, and many HOAs that favor earth-tone exteriors find tan easier to approve than bright white.

  • Color Runs All the Way Through

The color in a tan vinyl gate is part of the material itself, not a coating on top. There is nothing to peel or chip, and a light scuff shows the same tan underneath. You never paint or stain it.

  • Hides Dust and Fingerprints

Gates get touched every day. Light tan hides hand marks, dust and sprinkler spots much better than white, so the gate looks clean for longer.

  • Holds Its Color

Quality vinyl is made with titanium dioxide, a pigment that scatters UV rays and protects against fading and brittleness. Light tan reflects most sunlight, so it runs only slightly warmer than white and much cooler than dark wood-grain vinyl.

  • Will Not Rot or Rust

Vinyl does not rot like wood or rust like steel, which makes it a practical gate material near the coast and around pools and sprinklers.

  1. Reinforced Hinge Posts

The hinge post carries the full weight of the gate. We reinforce vinyl gate posts with aluminum or steel inserts, so the post cannot flex and let the gate drop. This one step prevents most of the sagging we are called out to fix.

    Aluminum or steel inserts
  2. Metal Frames Inside Wider Gates

Every vinyl gate has an internal frame, and wider gates need a stronger one. For double gates wider than 8 feet, we use a galvanized steel tube frame, which keeps the leaves square for the life of the gate.

    Steel frame over 8′
  3. Posts Set in Concrete

Gate posts are set deeper and in more concrete than standard posts, because they carry swinging loads every day. We let the concrete cure before hanging heavier gates.

    Deeper set, more concrete
  4. The Right Clearance

We leave 1 to 2 inches of clearance on each side of the gate. Too tight, and the gate rubs as vinyl expands in the summer heat. Too wide, and you get a visible gap. On sloped ground, we leave extra clearance at the bottom so the gate does not scrape as it opens.

    1–2″ each side
  5. Room for Expansion

Vinyl grows slightly in heat and shrinks when it cools. Over a 50°F daily swing, an 8-foot rail can move about 1/8 inch. Our gate sizing and hardware allow for that movement, so the gate does not bind in August or rattle in January.

    ≈ 1/8″ per 8′ rail
Hardware

Tan Vinyl Gate Hardware

We match the hardware to the gate's width, weight and purpose:

Hinges

  • Heavy-duty stainless or powder-coated hinges that will not rust in coastal air
  • Adjustable hinges that let us lift or realign the gate later without removing it
  • Self-closing spring hinges, required on pool gates and handy on side gates that get left open

Latches and Locks

  • Gravity latches for simple, reliable side gates
  • Lockable and keyed latches for security on side-yard and rear gates
  • Magnetic pool latches that self-latch and mount high, out of children's reach
  • Two-sided latches that open from both the yard and the street
  • Drop rods that hold one leaf of a double gate firmly in place
  • Gate stops that keep the gate from over-swinging and stressing the hinges

Hardware is available in black, white and tan-compatible finishes, so it blends with the gate instead of standing out.

Pool Safety

Tan Vinyl Pool Gates

A pool gate is the most important gate on any property. California requires pool access gates to open away from the pool and to be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch at least 60 inches above the ground. If the release is lower, it must sit on the pool side, at least 3 inches below the top of the gate, with no opening wider than ½ inch within 18 inches of the release.

We build tan vinyl pool gates to all of these rules, and we test every gate to make sure it closes and latches on its own from any open position. Each gate is designed as part of a complete pool barrier, so every gap and latch meets code.

California pool gate checklist

Every Box Ticked Before We Leave

60″+Minimum latch height above the ground — out of children's reach.
  • Opens away from the pool
  • Self-closing from any open position
  • Self-latching every time it closes
  • Lower release? Pool side, at least 3″ below the top, no opening wider than ½″ within 18″ of it

We fit self-closing hinges and magnetic pool latches, then test the gate from every position.

Color Match

Matching an Existing Tan Shade

Matching "tan" is harder than it sounds. Different manufacturers make tan in different shades, from pale sand and almond to deeper khaki and clay, and older vinyl may have mellowed slightly in the sun. Before ordering a new tan vinyl gate, we:

  • check the manufacturer of your existing vinyl, if possible
  • compare samples against it in daylight
  • match the board profile, height and post cap style

Adding a new gate usually means cutting a new opening, setting two reinforced posts in concrete and installing the gate with proper clearance.

  1. 01

    Measure the Opening

We measure the opening, check the slope, and confirm which way the gate should swing. If the gate leads to a pool, we confirm the swing direction and latch height first.

  2. 02

    Match and Order

We match the gate to your existing tan shade, style and height, and choose the right frame and hardware for its width. Standard gates typically arrive within about two weeks.

  3. 03

    Set Reinforced Posts

Gate posts are set in concrete, with aluminum or steel inserts in the hinge post. On wider gates, we add a galvanized steel frame.

  4. 04

    Hang and Adjust

We hang the gate, set even clearance on both sides, and adjust the hinges until it swings freely and sits square in the opening.

  5. 05

    Fit Hardware and Test

We install the latch, locks and gate stop, then open and close the gate repeatedly until it works cleanly every time. Pool gates are tested for self-closing and self-latching from every position.

Fire Safety · Zone 0

Side Gates and San Diego Fire Rules

Side gates often attach right to the house, which puts them inside the 5 feet closest to the structure. California's Zone 0 rules for high fire hazard areas restrict combustible materials in that zone, and vinyl is self-extinguishing but not non-combustible. For homes in those areas, we build the side gate in metal and powder coat it in a tan finish, so it blends with the rest of your tan vinyl.

How much does a tan vinyl gate cost?

Nationally, a vinyl walk gate typically costs $200 to $1,000 installed, and double gates run about $300 to $1,200 each. Hardware and posts can add $150 to $1,500. Tan and white are usually priced the same. We give a written, itemized quote after a free site visit.

Will a tan vinyl gate sag?

Not when it is built correctly. Most sagging comes from an unreinforced hinge post that flexes over time. We reinforce gate posts with aluminum or steel inserts, set them in concrete, and use galvanized steel frames on double gates wider than 8 feet, so the gate stays square.

Can you match a tan vinyl gate to my existing tan vinyl?

Usually, yes. Tan varies by manufacturer, from pale sand to deeper khaki, and older vinyl may have mellowed in the sun. We check the manufacturer when possible, compare samples in daylight, and match the board style, height and post caps for the closest result.

How wide can a tan vinyl gate be?

Walk gates are usually 36 to 48 inches wide, and privacy gates can reach about 72 inches. Double gates typically span 8 to 12 feet, and anything over 8 feet gets a galvanized steel frame. Sliding gates for driveways can span about 12 to 20 feet.

Does a tan vinyl gate fade?

Quality tan vinyl contains titanium dioxide and UV inhibitors, so it fades very slowly. Light tan reflects most sunlight and changes far less than dark wood-grain colors. Our N.V.P. vinyl is backed by a limited lifetime manufacturer warranty.

Can a tan vinyl gate be used for a pool?

Yes. A tan vinyl pool gate must open away from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch at least 60 inches above the ground. We install self-closing hinges and magnetic pool latches and test every pool gate before we leave.

How long does it take to install a tan vinyl gate?

A standard walk gate takes about 4 hours to install, and double or sliding gates take about a day. The longer wait is ordering, since standard gates typically arrive within about two weeks. Custom sizes and sloped openings can take longer.

Can I put a lock on a tan vinyl gate?

Yes. We install keyed latches, combination locks and two-sided latches on vinyl gates. Because we reinforce the frame and posts, the gate can carry heavy-duty security hardware without sagging or pulling loose.
