Commercial Scope

Commercial Fencing Built for San Diego Businesses

We have installed commercial fencing across San Diego County since 1984. We hold a C-13 fencing contractor licence (No. 529726) and have completed projects for retail centres, industrial yards, apartment complexes, schools, HOA communities and municipal properties throughout the region.

Commercial fencing differs from residential work in every measurable way — and the entire system has to meet stricter building codes and ADA accessibility requirements that residential fences never encounter.

Commercial vs Residential Specification

Same trade, different engineering. Here is what actually changes on a commercial job.

Residential Commercial

  • Post depth in concrete

On top of all of that: stricter building codes and ADA accessibility requirements that a residential fence never has to satisfy.

The Case For It

Why Businesses in San Diego County Need Purpose-Built Fencing

A properly engineered perimeter fence is the first physical deterrent — before cameras, before alarms, before security patrols.

What the perimeter does beyond security

Controls Flow

Directs pedestrian and vehicle movement to the entry points you choose, not the ones people find.

Defines Boundaries

Marks lease lines clearly in multi-tenant properties, so responsibility is never a conversation.

Screens Storage

Hides equipment and storage areas from public view — and from anyone shopping the yard.

Satisfies Underwriters

Meets the documented barrier requirement insurers ask for, which can pull premiums down.

Commercial Fence Types We Install

Installed price per linear foot, drawn on one shared $10–$70 scale so you can compare the four directly.

Chain Link

The most widely installed commercial material in the US. A 6‑ft galvanised chain link fence with 9‑gauge wire and 2‑inch mesh needs no upkeep beyond hardware checks.

Steel Security & Anti-Climb

Welded mesh panels, palisade and anti-climb systems — no horizontal rails on the exterior face, and mesh openings too tight for a foothold.

Wood & Vinyl

Not every property needs security first. A 6‑ft cedar wood privacy fence runs $25–$45; commercial-grade vinyl fencing $28–$55, with no painting or sealing.

Need more from a chain link run? We add barbed wire toppers, razor ribbon coils, vinyl privacy slats and anti-climb extensions. Vinyl-coated chain link in black or green blends into commercial landscaping — which matters for retail-facing properties and HOA-managed business parks.

Gates & Access

Commercial Gate and Access Control Systems

Gates are where commercial fencing projects become complex. A standard walk gate is straightforward, but most commercial properties need at least one vehicle-rated gate — and many need multiple entry points with different access levels.

Already have a gate? We retrofit automation onto existing commercial fence lines from $1,500 to $5,500, after a structural assessment of the posts and frame.

Sliding Gates

$3,500–$8,000

The default for commercial driveways wider than 16 feet. Sliding gates travel horizontally on a steel track and need less clearance than swing gates — ideal for tight loading docks and multi-lane entrances. Price is for a ½ HP motor, by width and material.

Openings over 16 ftLoading docksMulti-lane entry

Swing Gates

$2,500–$6,000

Single and dual swing gates suit properties with adequate setback and moderate traffic. A dual-swing automated gate with synchronised arm operators sits in that range, with access control chosen to match the property.

Pedestrian Gates & ADA

Code-required

Every commercial property in California must provide accessible pedestrian entry meeting ADA Title III. Latches must be operable with one hand, without tight grasping, pinching or twisting, and self-closing mechanisms must allow adequate passage time. We design gates that satisfy both security and accessibility.

Codes & Permits

San Diego Commercial Fencing Codes and Permits

San Diego's municipal code sets requirements for commercial fencing that differ from the residential rules. We handle the permitting process as part of the project scope.

Height Limits in the City of San Diego

Measured from finished grade · commercial properties
PERMIT THRESHOLD — 6 FT 3 ft Front yard 6 ft Side & rear — no permit 6 ft + Building permit required
Up to 6 ft Side and rear setbacks — no construction permit needed.
3 ft The limit for front-yard fences on commercial properties.
Above 6 ft Building permit, plus additional structural and setback requirements.

Fire-Resistive Construction in Wildland-Urban Interface Areas

San Diego County has extensive wildland-urban interface zones. Under the county building code, any portion of a fence within 5 feet of a building must be noncombustible material or approved fire-retardant wood meeting exterior wall fire-resistance standards.

  • Applies to commercial and residential alike
  • Directly affects material choice in Santee, Lakeside, Ramona and Alpine

Monitored Perimeter Security Fence Systems

San Diego's municipal code includes provisions for monitored perimeter security fence systems with electrified elements. We handle the permitting and coordinate with alarm monitoring services for qualifying commercial clients.

  • Requires an Alarm System Permit
  • Must meet IEC 60335 Part 2-76 safety standards
  • Permitted only in zones that do not allow residential use; applications accepted through 1 January 2028 under current sunset provisions
Sectors

Industries We Serve Across San Diego County

Each sector has its own specification — and usually its own code to satisfy. Here is what we build most often, and the rule that shapes it.

Warehouses and Distribution Centres

Large perimeter coverage, vehicle-rated gates, dock screening and equipment cage fabrication. Chain link with privacy slats or anti-climb mesh is the standard specification for most warehouse applications.

Typical build: 400–1,200 linear feet, posts 36–42 inches into concrete, at least one vehicle gate.

Retail Centres and Shopping Plazas

ADA-compliant pedestrian gates, decorative perimeter fencing and patio enclosures for restaurants.

Code: dumpster screening to Santee Municipal Code trash-enclosure requirements.

Schools and Childcare Facilities

Campus perimeter security with no-climb specifications, controlled entry points and playground enclosures.

Code: California Education Code — prevent unauthorised access while maintaining emergency egress.

Multi-Family and HOA Properties

Apartment complexes, townhome communities and condominium associations need consistent fencing across all units, plus controlled parking and pedestrian access.

Code: pool barriers compliant with California Title 24.

Construction Sites

Temporary and permanent perimeter fencing for active construction zones, installed fast and moved when the phase changes.

Code: Cal/OSHA — barriers around excavations deeper than 5 feet and anywhere public access must be restricted.

Serving all of San Diego County

How long does a commercial fence installation take in San Diego?

Most commercial projects take 1 to 3 weeks from mobilisation to completion. A straightforward 500-foot chain link perimeter with one vehicle gate and two pedestrian gates typically completes in 5 to 7 working days.

Larger projects with multiple gate systems, concrete work or electrical runs for automation may take longer.

Do I need a permit to install a commercial fence in San Diego?

Fences up to 6 feet in side and rear yards do not require a construction permit within the City of San Diego. Fences over 6 feet, fences in front setbacks exceeding 3 feet, and fences on top of retaining walls require a building permit.

Monitored perimeter security systems require a separate Alarm System Permit. We handle all permit applications as part of our project scope.

What is the most cost-effective commercial fence material?

Chain link is the lowest-cost option at $10 to $25 per linear foot installed for a standard 6-foot commercial fence. For properties that need a more professional appearance, vinyl-coated chain link with privacy slats offers a middle ground at $18 to $35 per linear foot.

Ornamental iron and steel run $30 to $70 per linear foot but deliver significantly higher curb appeal and a 30 to 50-year lifespan with minimal maintenance.

Can you retrofit an existing commercial fence with automated gates?

Yes. We regularly add automated slide or swing gate operators to existing commercial fence lines. The retrofit requires a structural assessment of the existing gate posts and frame, electrical routing for the motor, and installation of safety sensors and access controls.

Typical retrofit costs range from $1,500 to $5,500 depending on the gate type and access control features.
