Glass Gates in San Diego That Protect Your Space Without Hiding It

A glass gate keeps a space secure without closing it off. Pool owners use it to keep a clear line of sight to the water. Homeowners use iron-and-glass entries to make the front of the house feel open and finished. Businesses use glass gates on pool decks, patios and courtyards where a solid gate would block light and views.

Fred's Fencing Inc. has built gates across San Diego County since 1984. We install frameless glass gates, fabricate iron and aluminum gates with glass panels in our Santee shop, and repair the hinges, latches and panels that keep them working. Every glass panel we install is tempered or laminated safety glass, and every gate is hung and adjusted by our own crew.

Gate types

Types of Glass Gates We Build

01No frame

Frameless Glass Pool Gates

A single panel of thick tempered glass hung on stainless steel hinges, with no frame around it. It gives the clearest, most open look of any pool gate, so nothing breaks the view of the water when the gate is closed. Pool gates are built to California's barrier rules, covered in detail below.

02Posts & clamps

Semi-Frameless Glass Gates

Glass panels held by slim stainless or aluminum posts and clamps. They cost less than fully frameless gates and suit pool barriers, patios and side yards where a few visible posts are acceptable.

03Santee shop

Iron and Glass Entry Gates

Wrought iron or steel frames with glass inserts, fabricated in our Santee shop. Clear, frosted, seeded or rain glass sits inside a welded iron frame, which gives the strength of an iron pedestrian gate with the light and openness of glass. They are a popular choice for courtyard entries and front walkways.

04Won't rust

Aluminum and Glass Gates

Powder-coated aluminum frames with frosted or tinted glass panels. Aluminum cannot rust and weighs about one-third as much as steel, so these gates suit coastal homes and wider openings, including modern driveway and courtyard gates.

05Privacy

Frosted and Privacy Glass Gates

Acid-etched, sandblasted or laminated frosted glass lets light through while blocking clear views. These gates work well on side yards, courtyards and entries that face the street.

06Heavy use

Commercial Glass Gates

Glass gates for hotel pool decks, apartment amenity areas, restaurant patios and office terraces. They are built for heavy daily use and to the stricter code requirements that apply to public and commercial pools.

Specifications

Glass Gate Specifications

Thickness & type

Glass Thickness and Type

Most glass gates use 3/8-inch to ½-inch tempered glass. Tempered glass is 4 to 5 times stronger than standard annealed glass, and if it breaks, it crumbles into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards. Where a broken panel could leave an opening or fall onto a walkway, we use laminated glass, which stays in place as a barrier even when cracked.

Width & weight

Gate Width and Weight

Glass is heavy, and that weight hangs entirely on the hinges. A ½-inch glass panel weighs about 6.5 pounds per square foot, so a 3-foot by 5-foot pool gate weighs close to 100 pounds. That is why most frameless glass gates are kept to roughly 3 to 3.3 feet wide. Wider openings use framed glass gates or double leaves.

Swing

Hinge Options

  • Glass-to-glass hinges: mount the gate directly to an adjacent fixed glass panel, for a fully frameless look

  • Glass-to-wall hinges: mount the gate to a wall, column or masonry pier

  • Glass-to-post hinges: mount the gate to a stainless or aluminum post

  • Self-closing hydraulic hinges: close the gate on their own at a controlled speed, without slamming, and are required on pool gates

Secure

Latches

  • Magnetic pool latches: self-latching and designed to mount high on the gate, out of a child's reach

  • Gravity and keyed latches: for courtyard, side-yard and entry gates

  • Commercial latches and panic hardware: for gates that need a fast, keyless exit

Coast vs. inland

Hardware Grade

Near the coast, salt air corrodes standard stainless hardware within a few years. We use marine-grade 316 stainless on oceanfront and near-coast gates, and standard 304 stainless inland.

Pool barrier code

Glass Pool Gates: California Code Requirements

A pool gate is the part of the barrier that fails most often, because it is the part people use. California's pool barrier rules require every access gate to:

  • 01Open away from the pool, so a child pushing on it cannot swing it into the pool area
  • 02Be self-closing and self-latching from any open position, with no help from the user
  • 03Have its latch at least 60 inches above the ground. If the release is lower, it must sit on the pool side of the gate, at least 3 inches below the top, with no opening wider than ½ inch within 18 inches of the release.
  • 04Match the barrier: at least 60 inches tall, no more than 2 inches off the ground, and no gaps that let a 4-inch sphere pass through

These rules exist for good reason. Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and 81% of fatal child drownings with a known location happen in residential settings. A four-sided isolation barrier that separates the pool from the house and yard reduces a child's drowning risk by 83%. A gate that does not close and latch every time undoes all of that.

Public and commercial pools follow separate state rules. For example, hand-operated opening hardware on many public pool gates must sit between 42 and 44 inches above the deck. We build commercial pool gates to the requirements of your jurisdiction.

The gate is one part of a complete pool fencing system, and we design the two together, so every panel, gap and latch meets code.

Entry doors

Front Doors with Glass and Glass Entry Doors

Glass at the entry lets daylight into the home and gives the front of the house a more open, welcoming look. As a metal fabricator, we build front doors with glass in wrought iron and steel frames. Each front door with glass is fabricated in our Santee shop and finished with powder coating in your choice of color.

Iron Glass Entry Doors

Our glass entry doors combine a welded iron frame with tempered or laminated glass inserts. Operable glass panels can open behind the ironwork for airflow while the door stays locked. We offer clear, frosted, seeded and rain glass, depending on how much privacy you want at the entry.

Security Doors with Glass

For homeowners who want security first, we pair our iron window and door bars and security door designs with glass inserts. The iron does the security work, while the glass keeps the entry from feeling closed in.

Safety Glazing in Doors

Under the California Residential Code, any glass in a swinging, sliding or bifold door is a "hazardous location" and must be safety glazing. The federal CPSC 16 CFR 1201 standard was written specifically for glass in doors. Every door and gate panel we install is tempered or laminated, and permanently marked as safety glass.

Repair

Glass Door Repair and Glass Door Replacement

Glass gates and glass doors wear in predictable ways. Our glass door repair service covers the problems we see most:

  • Self-closing hinges that stop closing: hydraulic hinges lose tension or fall out of adjustment, so the gate no longer latches

  • Latches that no longer catch: the gate has dropped or shifted, and the latch is out of line

  • Corroded hardware: clamps, hinges and fasteners rusting in coastal air

  • Chipped or cracked panels: damage from impacts, or rare spontaneous breakage in tempered glass

  • Loose or leaning posts: usually from base shoes or anchors that have loosened over time

Made to measure

Glass Door Replacement

When a panel is cracked or broken, glass door replacement means ordering a new tempered or laminated panel cut to the exact size. Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after tempering, so every replacement panel is made to measure, including hinge and latch cutouts. We measure, order and install the new panel, and we replace worn hardware at the same visit.

Sliding doors

Sliding Glass Door Replacement and Sliding Glass Panels

For sliding glass door replacement, a standard two-panel residential door typically costs about $1,000 to $3,500 nationally, depending on size, frame material and glass type. Simpler repairs, like new rollers or a single replacement panel, usually cost a few hundred dollars. We will tell you on the first visit whether a repair or a full replacement makes more sense.

Commercial

Commercial Glass Doors and Gates

Commercial glass doors and gates take far more daily use than residential ones, and they face stricter code review. For hotels, apartment communities, restaurants and offices, we build:

  • glass pool gates with commercial-grade self-closing hinges and latches
  • glass and aluminum courtyard and patio gates
  • iron-and-glass entry gates for building courtyards and amenity areas
  • gates with panic hardware or keyless exit where required

We coordinate the gates with the rest of the barrier, including balcony railings, so the whole property uses matching hardware and finishes.

Maintenance

Glass Gate Maintenance

  • Every 4 to 8 weeks: Clean the glass with water and a squeegee or mild glass cleaner. Pool and coastal gates may need it more often to clear water spots and salt.

  • Every few months: Check that the gate swings freely and closes and latches on its own from any position.

  • Every year: Tighten hinge and clamp fasteners, adjust the self-closing hinges, and inspect hardware for corrosion.

  • Avoid: Abrasive pads, steel wool and harsh chemicals, which can scratch glass and damage hardware finishes.

01

Are glass gates safe for homes with children?

Yes, when built correctly. Tempered safety glass is 4 to 5 times stronger than standard glass and crumbles into blunt pieces if broken. A glass pool gate also has no rails or footholds to climb. For pools, it must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch at least 60 inches above the ground.

02

How thick is the glass in a glass gate?

Most glass gates use 3/8-inch to ½-inch tempered glass. Frameless gates typically use ½-inch glass, because the hinges carry the whole panel. Where a broken panel could create a hazard or an opening, we use laminated glass, which stays in place even when cracked.

03

How wide can a frameless glass gate be?

Most frameless glass gates are kept to about 3 to 3.3 feet wide. A ½-inch glass panel weighs about 6.5 pounds per square foot, so a larger gate quickly becomes too heavy for its hinges. Wider openings use framed iron or aluminum gates with glass panels, or double leaves.

04

Do you repair glass gates and glass doors?

Yes. Our glass door repair work covers self-closing hinges that no longer close, latches that do not catch, corroded hardware and cracked panels. When a panel needs replacing, we order new tempered glass made to the exact size, including hinge and latch cutouts, and install it with fresh hardware.

05

Can you build front doors with glass?

Yes. We fabricate wrought iron and steel front doors with glass inserts in our Santee shop, in clear, frosted, seeded or rain glass. Operable glass panels can open behind the ironwork for airflow. Every door panel is tempered or laminated safety glass, as California code requires.

06

What glass is required in doors and gates?

California code treats glass in swinging, sliding and bifold doors as a hazardous location, so it must be safety glazing. That means tempered or laminated glass meeting CPSC 16 CFR 1201 or ANSI Z97.1, permanently marked as safety glass. We use certified safety glass in every gate and door we install.

07

How do I maintain a glass gate near the coast?

Clean the glass every 4 to 8 weeks, or more often near the ocean, to remove salt film and water spots. Check that the gate still closes and latches on its own, and tighten and adjust the hardware once a year. We install marine-grade 316 stainless hardware on coastal gates to resist corrosion.

08

Do you install commercial glass gates?

Yes. We build glass gates for hotel pool decks, apartment amenity areas, restaurant patios and office terraces. Commercial gates use heavier-duty self-closing hinges and latches, and we build them to the code requirements for public and commercial pools in your jurisdiction.
