White Vinyl Gates in San Diego, Bright White and Built Not to Sag
White vinyl gates give an entry a crisp, clean look that never needs paint. They will not rust like steel, rot like wood or splinter in your hands, and a quick rinse brings them back to bright white. The one thing that separates a good vinyl gate from a bad one is what is inside it, because an unreinforced vinyl gate sags.

Fred's Fencing Inc. has built and installed gates across San Diego County since 1984. We install white vinyl gates in N.V.P. (National Vinyl Products) vinyl, backed by a limited lifetime manufacturer warranty, and we reinforce every gate with the right posts, inserts and frames for its size. Our own Santee shop fabricates the steel that keeps wide white vinyl gates square for years.
Types of White Vinyl Gates We Install
| Gate Type | Typical Width | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Walk gate | 36″ to 48″ | Side yards, backyard entries and trash bin access |
| Privacy gate | 36″ to 72″ | Solid, full-height entries with no sightlines through |
| Picket gate | 36″ to 48″ | Front walkways and garden entries |
| Double gate | 8′ to 12′ | Lawn equipment, trailers, pool furniture and RV access |
| Swing driveway gate | 10′ to 16′ | Flat driveways with room for the gate to open |
| Sliding driveway gate | 12′ to 20′ | Driveways with a slope or limited swing space |
| Pool gate | 36″ to 48″ | Pool entries that must self-close and self-latch |
Walk Gates
The gate you use most. A white vinyl walk gate is sized for a person, a wheelbarrow or a trash bin, with a lockable latch on the side if you need it.

Privacy Gates
Solid tongue-and-groove boards with no gaps, so nothing shows through. We hang privacy gates with minimal ground clearance, so there is no sightline at the bottom.
Picket Gates
Low, open gates with spaced pickets and decorative caps. A white picket gate is the classic front-walk entry, and it suits Cape Cod, Craftsman and farmhouse-style homes.
Double Gates
Two leaves that open together for a wide opening. One leaf is locked in place with a drop rod, so the other works like a single gate for everyday use. For double gates wider than 8 feet, we use an upgraded galvanized steel tube frame.
Pool Gates
Self-closing, self-latching gates built to California's pool rules, covered in detail below. A bright white gate also stays easy to spot from inside the house, so you can check at a glance that the pool entry is closed.
White Vinyl Driveway Gates
White vinyl driveway gates give a home a bright, finished entry at a lower cost than custom iron, with no painting or rust to worry about. Because a driveway gate is far wider and heavier than a walk gate, it has to be built differently.
How We Build White Vinyl Driveway Gates
Steel inside: Every white vinyl driveway gate we build is framed in galvanized or welded steel, with the vinyl as the finished face. The vinyl gives the look; the steel carries the weight.
Swing or slide: Flat driveways with room to open suit driveway swing gates, while sloped driveways and short setbacks work better with sliding driveway gates.
Single or double: Wider openings are usually split into two leaves, which cuts the weight on each hinge post.
Wind-aware design: A solid white privacy face catches wind like a sail. On exposed lots, we recommend a semi-privacy or picket-top design, or a heavier frame and posts.
Automated White Vinyl Driveway Gates
A steel-framed white vinyl driveway gate can be automated with a swing or slide operator, a keypad, remote or phone access, and safety sensors. Automated gates must meet UL 325 for the operator and ASTM F2200 for the gate's construction. San Diego County also requires an approved emergency key switch on automatic gates across a fire access road or driveway. We wire, program and test the whole system using the same automated driveway gate systems we install on steel and iron entries.
Homeowners who want a heavier or more decorative entry can compare white vinyl with the full range of driveway gates we build in steel and iron.
Why Choose White Vinyl Gates?
Bright White That Lasts
Quality white vinyl contains about 10 to 12 parts titanium dioxide per 100 parts of compound. That pigment blocks the UV rays that cause yellowing and brittleness, so a quality white vinyl gate stays white. Cheap or recycled vinyl is what usually yellows.
The Coolest Gate Color
White reflects more sunlight than any other gate color, so it stays cooler to the touch on a hot day than tan, gray or wood-grain vinyl. Less heat also means less expansion and contraction over the life of the gate.
No Paint, No Rust, No Rot
The white color runs all the way through the vinyl, so there is nothing to peel or chip. Vinyl will not rust near the coast or rot from sprinkler overspray, which makes it one of the lowest-maintenance gate materials available.
Safe for Kids and Pets
Smooth white vinyl has no splinters, no rusty edges and no exposed nails. That makes it a good choice for gates around play areas and pools.
A Clean, Classic Look
White vinyl gates suit almost any home style, from beach cottages in Pacific Beach to new builds in Chula Vista. They pair well with white trim, and with black hardware for a bold contrast.
Homeowners who want a warmer, earth-toned entry can choose tan vinyl gates, built to the same standards.
Why Vinyl Gates Sag, and How We Prevent It
A gate hangs from one side, so its weight pulls the free end down every time it swings. Vinyl is light, but it is also flexible, so a white vinyl gate without reinforcement will slowly droop until the latch stops lining up. These are the details we build into every gate:
Reinforced Hinge Posts
The hinge post carries the full weight of the gate. We reinforce every vinyl gate post with an aluminum or steel insert, so it cannot flex. This single step prevents most of the sagging we are called out to fix.
Metal Frames Inside the Gate
Every white vinyl gate has an internal frame. Double gates over 8 feet wide and all driveway gates get a galvanized steel tube frame that keeps the leaves square.
Posts Set Deep in Concrete
Gate posts carry swinging loads every day, so we set them deeper and in more concrete than standard posts, and let the concrete cure before hanging heavier gates.
The Right Clearance
We leave 1 to 2 inches on each side of the gate. Too tight, and the gate rubs as vinyl expands in summer heat. Too wide, and you get a visible gap. On sloped ground, we add bottom clearance so the gate does not scrape as it opens.
Room for Expansion
Vinyl grows slightly in heat and shrinks as it cools. Over a 50°F daily swing, an 8-foot rail can move about 1/8 inch. We size every gate and its hardware to allow for that movement, so it does not bind in August or rattle in January.
White Vinyl Gate Hardware
We match the hardware to each gate's size, weight and purpose.
Hinges
Heavy-duty stainless or powder-coated hinges that will not rust in coastal air
Adjustable hinges that let us lift or realign the gate later without taking it down
Self-closing spring hinges, required on pool gates and useful on side gates that get left open
Latches and Locks
Gravity latches for simple, reliable everyday gates
Lockable and keyed latches for side and rear gates
Magnetic pool latches that self-latch and mount high, out of children's reach
Two-sided latches that open from both sides of the gate
Drop rods to hold one leaf of a double gate in place
Gate stops that keep the gate from over-swinging and stressing the hinges
White hardware blends into the gate for a clean look, while black hardware gives a sharp, modern contrast.
White Vinyl Pool Gates
A pool gate is the most important gate on any property. California requires pool access gates to open away from the pool and to be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch at least 60 inches above the ground. If the release is lower, it must sit on the pool side, at least 3 inches below the top of the gate, with no opening wider than ½ inch within 18 inches of the release.
These rules exist for good reason: drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4. We build white vinyl pool gates with self-closing hinges and magnetic pool latches, and we test every gate to make sure it closes and latches on its own from any open position. Each one works as part of a complete pool barrier that meets code.

Matching a New White Vinyl Gate
Not all white vinyl is the same white. Shades vary slightly between manufacturers, from bright white to a softer off-white, and older vinyl can dull a little with age. Before ordering a new gate to sit beside existing white vinyl, we:
- check the original manufacturer, if possible
- compare samples side by side in daylight
- match the board profile, height and post cap style
Adding a new gate usually means cutting a new opening, setting two reinforced posts in concrete and hanging the gate with proper clearance. A standard walk gate takes about 4 hours, and a double gate about a day.
1. Measure the Opening
We measure the opening, check the slope, and confirm which way the gate should swing or slide. For pool gates, we confirm the swing direction and latch height first.
On site2. Choose and Order
You choose the style, height and hardware, and we confirm the right frame for the gate's width. Standard white vinyl gates typically arrive within about two weeks.
Your choices3. Set Reinforced Posts
We set gate posts in concrete, with aluminum or steel inserts in the hinge post. Wider gates and driveway gates get a galvanized steel frame.
Concrete cure4. Hang and Adjust
We hang the gate, set even clearance on both sides, and adjust the hinges until it swings or slides freely and sits square in the opening.
1–2 in clearance5. Fit Hardware and Test
We install the latch, locks and gate stop, then cycle the gate open and closed until it works cleanly every time. Pool gates are tested for self-closing and self-latching from every position.

How Much Do White Vinyl Gates Cost?
| Gate | Typical Cost (National) |
|---|---|
| Vinyl walk gate, installed | $200 to $1,000 |
| Manual vinyl gate, installed | $200 to $1,100 |
| Vinyl double gate, installed | $300 to $1,200 each |
| Hinges, locks, handles and posts | $150 to $1,500 |
| Automated vinyl gate | $750 to $5,600 |
White vinyl driveway gates sit at the higher end of these ranges because of their size, steel frames and, when automated, the operator and access controls. These factors move the price most:
- gate width and number of leaves
- privacy, picket or driveway style
- steel frame and post reinforcement
- swing or sliding operation
- hardware quality and pool-rated latches
- automation and access controls

If your white vinyl gate drags, sticks or will not latch, we fix the most common problems:
Sagging gates: usually from an unreinforced hinge post or a wide leaf with no metal frame. We add post inserts or a steel frame and rehang the gate square.
Latches that no longer catch: usually because the gate or post has shifted. We realign the gate and reset or replace the latch.
Loose or broken hinges: usually from screws pulling out of unreinforced vinyl. We replace them with heavy-duty, adjustable hinges.
Cracked boards or rails: usually from impacts or wind slamming the gate open. Most parts can be replaced without replacing the whole gate.
If a gate has sagged more than once or the frame is cracked, a new reinforced gate is usually the better long-term value.
Side Gates and San Diego Fire Rules
Side gates often attach directly to the house, which places them inside the 5 feet closest to the structure. California's Zone 0 rules for high fire hazard areas restrict combustible materials in that zone, and vinyl is self-extinguishing but not non-combustible. For homes in those areas, we build the side gate in metal and powder coat it white, so it matches your other white vinyl gates.
Keeping a White Vinyl Gate White
Every few months: Rinse the gate with a garden hose, and wipe the latch area where hands leave marks.
Twice a year: Wash it with mild soap, water and a soft brush, working from the top down, then rinse well.
Green film or mildew: On shaded gates, a mix of water and white vinegar or a vinyl-safe cleaner removes it without harming the finish.
Hardware check: Tighten hinge screws, and spray hinges and latches with silicone lubricant so they keep working smoothly.
Pool gates: Test monthly that the gate closes and latches on its own from any open position.
Avoid: Steel wool, harsh solvents and high-pressure spray close to the surface, which can dull the finish.

01How much do white vinyl gates cost?
Nationally, a vinyl walk gate typically costs $200 to $1,000 installed, and double gates run about $300 to $1,200 each. Hardware and posts can add $150 to $1,500, and automated vinyl gates run about $750 to $5,600. We give a written, itemized quote after a free site visit.
02Will a white vinyl gate turn yellow?
A quality white vinyl gate should not. Premium vinyl contains about 10 to 12 parts titanium dioxide per 100 parts of compound, which blocks the UV rays that cause yellowing. Cheap or recycled vinyl is what usually yellows. Our N.V.P. vinyl carries a limited lifetime manufacturer warranty.
03Do white vinyl gates sag?
Not when they are built correctly. Most sagging comes from an unreinforced hinge post that flexes over time. We reinforce gate posts with aluminum or steel inserts, set them in concrete, and use galvanized steel frames on double gates over 8 feet and on all driveway gates.
04Can white vinyl driveway gates be automated?
Yes. We frame white vinyl driveway gates in steel so they stay rigid under a motor, then add a swing or slide operator, keypad, remote or phone access, and safety sensors. Every automated gate is built to UL 325 and ASTM F2200 safety standards.
05How wide can a white vinyl gate be?
Walk gates are usually 36 to 48 inches wide, and privacy gates can reach about 72 inches. Double gates typically span 8 to 12 feet, swing driveway gates about 10 to 16 feet, and sliding driveway gates about 12 to 20 feet. Anything over 8 feet gets a steel frame.
06Can a white vinyl gate be used for a pool?
Yes. A white vinyl pool gate must open away from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch at least 60 inches above the ground. We install self-closing hinges and magnetic pool latches, and we test every pool gate before we leave.
07How do I keep a white vinyl gate clean?
Rinse it with a hose every few months, and wash it twice a year with mild soap, water and a soft brush. Wipe the latch area more often, since hands leave marks there. For green film on shaded gates, a water and white vinegar mix works well without dulling the finish.
08How long does it take to install a white vinyl gate?
A standard walk gate takes about 4 hours to install, and double or sliding gates take about a day. Ordering is the longer wait, since standard white vinyl gates typically arrive within about two weeks. Driveway gates and custom sizes can take longer.
